Medal of Honor Recipient Norman Francis Bates
Sgt. Bates (1839-1915) of Co. E, 4th Iowa Cavalry, was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing the enemy flag and the flag bearer at Columbus, Georgia on April 16, 1865. The Bates family lived on a farm in Poweshiek County. After the War, Bates returned to farm there. Later he homesteaded in North Dakota and then moved to California to join a son.

He is buried in the beautiful Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California. This is located at 1712 S. Glendale Avenue. He is buried in Section D, Lot 23, Space 3. There is a booth at the entrance that will provide a map - however, we found there are two Lot 23's in Section D and had much difficulty in finding the plaque. See the GPS map for help. According to the book "Profiles of Valor" this was an unmarked grave until 2004 when family members and members of the SUVCW placed this plaque on the grave site. Photo taken 2/5/11.
