Medal of Honor Recipient Orson Bennett
Lt. Bennett (1841-1904) was a member of the 102nd U.S. Colored Troops. He was awared the Medal of Honor at Honey Hill, SC on November 30, 1864 for leading a group of men to retrieve cannons left on the battlefield while being raked by enemy fire. He lived in Iowa, both before and after the War. He enlisted from Dubuque. Later in life, he moved to Washington D.C. and Philadelphia in his real estate business. He is buried in Westminster Cemetery on Belmont Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, PA. This is NW of Philadelphia. The location within the cemetery is in the Landsdowne section - lot 94. At the entrance, bear right along the Belmont section - then take a sharp right to the Lansdowne section - the location is the third row from the edge of the cemetery. Photos taken May 15, 2010.
