Medal of Honor Recipient Luther Kaltenbach
Sgt. Kaltenbach (1843-1922) is buried in the National Cemetery in Los Angeles. He was a member of Co. F of the 12th Iowa Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing the flag of the 44th Mississippi at Nashville on December 16, 1864. Previously, he was wounded and captured at the "Hornets Nest" at Shiloh on April 6, 1862. He was paroled and later rejoined the regiment. After birth in Germany, his family moved to the Manchester area in Delaware County in Iowa. After the war, he suffered from disability due to rheumatism and gunshot wounds from the war. He moved west to find a milder climate and spent the last years of his life in homes for disabled soldiers in California.

He is buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery, 950 S. Sepulveda Blvd., in Section 43, Row A, Grave 15. This is at the corner of Antietam and Appomattox Streets in the Cemetery. The grave is the 6th stone from this corner. Photo taken 2/6/11.
