Medal of Honor Recipient Horatio Birdsall
Sgt. Birdsall (1833-1891) was a member of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing the enemy flag at the Chattahoochee River at Columbus, Georgia on April 16, 1865. Not too much is known of his life but he was a resident of Keokuk and moved to Kansas after the War. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery - Section 13, Lot 6935. I found it difficult to locate the headstone and suggest one check at the Visitors Center where they will plot it on a cemetery map. Photo taken May 16, 2010.
